A simple section explaining when you need a license, how to get it, and what it costs.
Quick answer
Freshwater needs a license. Simple sea shore fishing usually does not.
If you fish reservoirs or dams, get a DFMR license first. If you fish from the sea shore with a normal rod, that is usually the no-license case.

How to get a license
Issued by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR).
Prepare
ID or passport and basic personal details.
Apply
Issue or renew the application through CyLogin.
Pay
After the DFMR response, pay for the license through JCC Smart.
The license is personal: keep it with you while fishing and show it with ID if requested. It is valid from 1 January to 31 December of the same year.
Price
€35/year
All dams where fishing is allowed
€17/year
One selected dam
Validity: 1 January to 31 December each year, regardless of the issue date.
